Congratulations to Patrick Rensing
Patrick Rensing successfully defended his Ph.D. thesis on January 6, 2010. Patrick’s thesis, titled “Studies on the Theology of Ice and Clathrate Hydrate Slurries Formed In Situ from Water-in-Oil Emulsions” was the first study in the CHR to successfully study the flow properties of ice and hydrate in, providing insight into a critical area for hydrates in flow assurance. Patrick was co-advised by Prof. Matthew Liberatore. Patrick has joined Marathon oil.

Prof. David T. Wu becomes CHR Associate Director
The CHR welcomes Prof. David T. Wu as Associate Director, joining Profs. Sloan, Koh, and Sum as the leaders of the center. Prof. Wu has long been involved with the CHR as affiliated faculty helping in many different areas, including significant contributions in advance in our understand of droplet size predictions, jamming, nucleation theory, and geomechanical properties. We are excited with the opportunity to recognize Prof. Wu as an integral part of the CHR.

Congratulations to Simon Davies
Simon Davies successfully defended his Ph.D. thesis on August 19, 2009. Simon’s thesis, titled “The Role of Transport Resistances in the Formation and Remediation of Hydrate Plugs” was well received by his thesis committee in a packed auditorium with a record number of attendees. Simon's thesis generated a great deal of interest from the audience; the 30 minute presentation was followed by over two hours or questions and discussion. When asked about the defense, Simon responded "it's a relief to have that out of the way, now I can get back to the real business of stopping hydrate plugs." Since the defense, Simon has received two job offers and hopes to make a decision on his career in the near future.

Welcome Masika Pascall
The CHR welcomes Masika Pascall as the newest Ph.D. student to the group. Masika successfully completed the qualifier exam in the department. Congratulations! Masika comes to us from Trinidad-Tobago. We look forward to her contributions to the group.

Congratulations to Alfredo Guariguata
Alfredo Guariguata successfully defended his M.S. thesis on March 16, 2009. Alfredo’s thesis, titled “Jamming Mechanisms of Hydrate Particles, Experiments and Modeling” was the first study in the CHR on jamming of particles as a means to understand the plugging of hydrates in pipelines. Alfredo’s work set the foundation for further studies on jamming as a major component in hydrate plugging. Alfredo will be joining KBR in the coming months as a Process Control Engineer.

Congratulations to Laura Dieker
Laura Dieker successfully defended her M.S. thesis on March 3, 2009. Laura’s thesis, titled “Cyclopentane Hydrate Interparticle Adhesion Force Measurements,” furthered our understanding of hydrate particle adhesion, one key aspect in the characterization of hydrate agglomeration behavior in oil and gas flowlines. Laura’s next adventure will be with EnCana, in Dallas, where she will work as an engineer in their New Graduate Development Program.

Welcome Lars Jensen
Lars Jensen joins the Center for Hydrate Research as a visiting scholar. He comes from the Denmark Technical University. He will be spending four months with us working on a modeling and simulations of hydrates alongside Matt Walsh.
January 6, 2009
Welcome Ishan Rao
The CHR welcomes Ishan Rao as the newest Ph.D. student to the group. Ishan successfully completed the qualifier exam in the department. Congratulations! Ishan comes to us from Bikaner (Bachelor's of Chemical Engineering, UDCT, Mumbai), INDIA. We look forward to his contributions to the group.

Welcome Guro Aspenes
Guro Aspenes joins the Center for Hydrate Research as a visiting scholar. She comes from University of Bergen/Sintef, NORWAY. She will be spending six months with us working on a hydrate particles characterization.
January 5, 2009
Congratulations to John Boxall
John Boxall successfully defended his PhD thesis. John’s thesis, titled “Hydrate Plug Formation from <50% Water Content Water-in-Oil Emulsions,” described a comprehensive study on droplet size using FBRM/PVM measurements as well as detailed comparison of prediction from CSMHyK-OLGA to pilot scale flowloop experiments. In the short-term, John will remain with the Center as a postdoctoral associate.
December 2, 2008
Welcome Prof. Takeshi Sugahara
Prof. Takeshi Sugahara joins the Center for Hydrate Research as a Postdoctoral Research Associate. He comes from the Osaka University, JAPAN. He will be spending one year with us working on a hydrogen storage project.
October 22, 2008
Welcome Prof. Vahid Taghakhani
Prof. Vahid Taghakhani joins the Center for Hydrate Research as a Postdoctoral Research Associate. He comes from the Sharif University of Technology, IRAN. He will be spending one year with us working on the development of the latest models into CSMHyK and its implementation with OLGATM.
September 19, 2008
Welcome Dr. P. R. S. Prasad
Dr. Prasad joins the Center for Hydrate Research as a Postdoctoral Research Associate. He comes from the National Research Institute in Hyderabad, INDIA. He will be spending one year with us. Dr. Prasad background is on Raman spectrocopy of gas hydrates.

Congratulations Joe Nicholas and Tim Strobel
Joe Nicholas and Tim Strobel successfully defended their PhD theses on consecutive dates. Joe Nicholas defended his thesis on the August 25th, closely followed by his good friend and room-mate Tim Strobel who defended on the August 26th. Joe's thesis described the development of a model for hydrate formation in gas pipelines; the model was based on experimental results from a purpose-built million dollar flowloop. Tim's thesis described recent efforts to store hydrogen inside clathrates; hydrogen storage is one of the main steps towards a Hydrogen Economy.
According to Matt Walsh, a fellow PhD student, "it's a spectacular accomplishment; the group will be a different place without these two giants of hydrate research". Tim will be leaving Colorado for a post-doctoral position at the Carnegie Institute in Washington DC. Joe has accepted a job in Dallas Texas working as a Petroleum Engineer.

Welcome Professor Sum
Dr. Amadeu Sum has joined the Research Faculty at the Center for Hydrate Research. Dr. Sum graduated from the Colorado School of Mines with his Masters degree in 1996 before completing his PhD at the University of Delaware. He then joined the research faculty at Virginia Tech. Dr. Sum has extensive experience in molecular simulations and Raman Spectroscopy. According to Professor Koh "Dr. Sum is an excellent addition to the group and we look forward to working with him."
